A Brief History of Theatre '90

Theatre '90, now well into its second decade, is both a performing arts and an educational institution, staffed by professionals: certified teachers with bachelor's or master's degrees in education or the arts, skilled in performance, music, choreography and technical aspects of theatrical production and performance. Since 1990 we have presented superior quality musicals and plays in a variety of locations. Whether the venue be a train, a park, a restaurant or a state-of-the-art theater, the quality of our productions has never flagged. In 1995 and 1996, we were awarded the Syracuse Area Music Award ("Sammy") for "Most Outstanding Musical Theatre Production" for PHANTOM and SHOWBOAT, respectively. No other theatre company has achieved this distinction.

Often selected for advisory and consulting challenges, Theatre '90 numbers among many successes the auditioning, casting and training of 36 children for the national tour of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," later being informed that our group was "the best." As a semi-professional theatre company, we take great pride in creating a rehearsal and show environment in which every participant can feel secure and essential —learning, growing and becoming a confident risk-taker during the production process. We rejoice as people of all ages and interests gain knowledge and expertise in all aspects of the performing arts, as our team approach creates each new show. We encourage and nurture the growth of talent as we train dancers, singers and theatre technicians, in order to raise our production values with every new endeavor.

With our "graduates" working in stock and regional theatre, as well as on Broadway, we are proud of the training we offer to children (six and older) and adults of every age. Many who participate in our training programs and stage performances have been accepted by excellent college theater programs locally and throughout the nation. We have a strong "family" of volunteers (indeed, many of those who participate with us consider us their extended family) who enjoy their time with us as well as profiting from every Theatre '90 learning experience.

Theatre '90 is a uniquely positioned community asset, evidenced by its capabilities and its achievements. It is incorporated as a not-for-profit, organization under New York State and Federal statutes, earning the right to solicit tax-deductible contributions, donations and grants. We believe that art is civilization. It's also fun, and healthful. Theatre gives much to those attending, as well as those participating. We want to give more learning experiences to those who attend, appear in, or help with, our shows. Our phone number is 638-8448; our box office is 479-5495.
